Have you heard of Barbour? It had humble beginnings in 1894 in South Shields. It is a 5th generation family owned business and has developed a presence in over 40 countries. Barbour’s goal was is to fashionably meld the British Countryside with wit, grit and glamour to its fully functional clothing. They are primary know for their use of Wax cotton, which could be the longest standing relationship with this material. What is wax cotton? It was developed for people that worked on fishing boats, dock workers, etc to keep them dry at times. The wax cotton was referred to as oilskin to describe how the fabric worked. However, due to the original design it caused the fabric to become stiff when very cold and it would turn a yellowish color. With research and development during the 1930’s a new wax cotton was developed that infused cotton with paraffin which produced a highly resistant and softer than anything before it material. Over the years Barbour has expanded in the world of motorsport and was the premiere racing suit provider in Britain until they left the sport in 1977. They have also created shooting jackets and accessories for the modern sportsman. As time has marched on they have continually made technological improvements to all their products and the way in which they create them. Why buy a Barbour? Why buy a Barbour?
