Movie Review: Suicide Squad

8/22/2016

Now, lets face it, I know this is menswear store.so what does a movie about villains have to do with men’s clothing. Well nothing really, there was some interesting fashion in the show, especially Will Smiths pimp daddy look with the big coat and hat while playing dead pool. But mostly it was eye candy for the comic fan.

Which brings me to the movie itself. Now there will be some SPOILERS here so if you have not seen the move then I would not read any further. I would like to start off by saying that I did find the movie entertaining. It was fun and I was not expecting to be a life changing movie. However, I feel that after watching it there was just one flaw that I do have to voice.
My main glaring issue I felt from the start was the villain. Not the anti-heros but the actually “villain” in the movie, the enchantress.

It seemed that she was this all powerful being that for sometime had been under the control of the other Wallan (the controller of our main characters) but of course she escapes with the help of her brother who also just happened to be laying around in a jar and was released. So the enchantress and her brother then go on to begin building some type of machine (which we never see get completed...or was it, I wasn’t really sure of that).

So as our fearless hero’s make there way through a gauntlet of exploding choppers, minions and many other things. They end up in a bar and have a hero moment and decide to go and “kill” the enchantress.

So here now we have a few super humans (yah a guy that shoots fire from his hands but does not want to kill because of reasons and a giant croc) Other than that we have pretty normal people that are good at doing things, well except for Harley all she does is act crazy, shake her ass and hit things with a bat.

Ok, so now these guys are going to manage to take out this over powerful enchantress who with her brother… who managed to ransack an entire city, defeats the military easily and who’s sister transformers them and any civilian into their evil minions.
So lets face it, It just seemed that the whole thing was a little too easy for that scope of a villain and not to mention that her brother the other godly creature was pretty easily defeated by our hero’s of the story (Apparently, bombs defeat giant fire guys..but bullets don’t really do much). During the final fight scene as well I would like to point out that the minions throughout the entire movie suddenly just disappeared. I guess the team must have taken out a ton of them.

So with that the main villain in the movie was over the top and I felt that their power level far exceed the main characters in the movie (Whom were captured by the very, people whom the villains had already so easily taken care of). It was almost an age of Ultron clone except there was no Iron Man, Thor, Hulk or Captain America (If this was a Justice League movie I could see it working)…DC in my opinion should bring it down a level from the major comic book scene and return to the Nolan franchise way of thinking and filming with a gritty and more down to earth performance. They are not going to win the comic book movie race as seen in the other movie offerings to date.

In the end though I did enjoy the movie and if you are a fan of the DC Universe you can't miss it. However,  If you are looking for a more down to earth Suicide Squad experience check out the DC animated feature “Assault on Arkham”, it was what I would call more suited to the characters and their abilities.

Cheers,

Brett Walker
